In my previous blog just a few days ago on the Manchester Attacks, I had expressed concern regarding the lowering of threat levels from critical to severe, despite the fact that terrorists regularly call for people to launch attacks on innocents in the month of Ramadan.I had also expressed concerns regarding lapses in security and intelligence.Unfortunately, my concerns were correct.

On Saturday, 6th June 2017, shortly after 22:00 (10 p.m.) the UK became victim to a third terror attack in less than three months in which 8 people have been reportedly killed and more than 40 wounded.

A speeding white transit van ploughed into a crowd of people on London Bridge. The van then crashed. 3 people got out of the van and brandishing 12 inch knives stabbed people in Borough Market. The men were wearing "hoax" suicide vests. The 3 attackers have been shot and killed within 8 minutes of having received the first call.

Update 1: The identities of 2 of the 3 attackers have been released by the police. One was Pakistan born Khuram Butt from Barking London, who was (as usual?) known to police and MI5. The other was Rachid Redouane/ Rachid Eikhdar. The icing on the cake is that Butt is said to have been earlier featured in a Channel 4 documentary about a year ago featuring Isamic Jihadi extremists.

Update 2:The third attacker has been named as Youssef Zaghba, a 22 year old Moroccan Italian man from East London. Last year, he had been stopped at an Italian airport on his way to Syria. He had been put on a EU wide database (the Schengen System) but not prosecuted. The Italian airport authorities has reportedly found ISIS related material on his mobile phone!!

According to unconfirmed reports, Zaghba should have been prevented from entering the UK once his name was on the Schengen System but authorities (border staff)  still let him in!!

As per reports of eyewitness accounts the men were shouting "This is for Allah" as they indiscriminately stabbed people.

What is indeed perplexing is the urgency of the UK authorities to sort of relax and try to project that everything was back to normal after the 522 Manchester Arena Attack. While it is completely understandable that the intelligence agencies a limited by the enormity of this new type of terrorism where every wannabe Jihadi can suddenly tip over and start attacking without formal training and formal communications / instructions from the professional terror group, what can't be forgiven is the ridiculously naive belief within the intelligence agencies, the administrators and counter terrorism organizations that the "attacks are over for now"

It appears that the entire set up needs massive overhauling and the definition of the new "normal" needs to be established again. A new "normal" can definitely be more screening, stricter vigilance, restrictions on internet and even higher levels of invasion of privacy. It simply can't be more innocents being slaughtered on a regular basis in order to justify one's faith in fairyland.

Even as you are reading this blog, the new harsh and horrifying reality is unfolding before our very eyes. Within hours of the blast, the United Kingdom will host the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 match between India and Pakistan in Burmingham. Pakistan, whom the Indian Government holds responsible for several terror attacks in India, will pitch their cricket team to play India in a match which will be watched by millions. The media and advertisers have been milking this issue for the last several days trying to grab as many eyeballs as possible.
The greatest irony unfolding itself in front of all the millions of eyeballs will be that a few hours before the match, Indian soldiers have been killed in a terrorist attack. The money generated on account of illegal betting on the India Pakistan match may once again fund another attack in the UK or in India.

The London Bridge twin terror attacks definitely show a monumental failure of the intelligence agencies in being able to prevent such attacks. The authorities are clearly victims of a "God Complex", where they are not only reluctant to take measures based on actionable intelligence for fear of appearing "inhuman" , but are also suffering from an over confidence, that even if they don't act, they possess enough resources to prevent anything bad from happening. Unfortunately they have been proved wrong on both counts and innocents have paid the price of their lives. In the words of a very famous author:

"অন্যায় যে করে আর অন্যায় যে সহে
 তব ঘৃণা যেন তারে তৃণসম দহে।
(The one who commits a wrong and the one who tolerates wrong- doing, may they both be engulfed by the fire of your contempt)"

Now is the time to upgrade the counter terrorism methodologies in a radical manner. Merely deflecting the issue by holding concerts, making statements that "we are strong, we will get through this" or trying to appear as politically correct "Gods" will not only make matters worse. In the world we are in right now, we are all mortals and till the time there is a divine intervention, it's best we all behave as humans.

So what is the NEW NORMAL? - I let the people decide.

  1. Seems like mosul has been captured and the attacks here have also stopped. At least for now

  2. @Meridith CNN already did a program talking about ISIS 2.0 after mosul. This will be scattered over european countries and afghanistan. We need to be even more vigilant for the expected backlash. Things are far from over

  3. This is the new normal man, we need to take measures to take care of ourselves. No Governments gonna do nothin man.

  4. Latest truck attack in New York what rottenmangoman wrote in this blog. Governments and courts need to be vary of activists , courts and NGOs who may end up causing more harm than good with the best of intentions
